Sitting pensively supporting on his bed at the Machakos County Referral Hospital, Nicholas Maingi narrates his life-threatening attack by a hyena in Kyeleni village of Matungulu.

The 34-year-old says he was on his way home from the local shopping centre where he had gone to watch the ongoing AFCON football games when he was attacked by a hyena.

“The wild animal pounced on me from the nearby bushes. I tried to fight it off but it mauled me and tore off my right leg,”said a teary Maingi.

He says his call for help arrived a little too late as the hyena had already started mauling his left leg.

“Residents who came to my rescue rushed me to Kangundo Level Four Hospital for treatment and later I was transferred to Machakos” he says.

Clinical officer Hussein Hassan said although Maingi’s legs were extensively damaged, he is responding positively to treatment.

“The patent is responding positively to medication following a successful amputation of his right lower limp. He also sustained multiple injuries but we have given him treatment,” he says.

Maingi’s brother, Justus Muindi, says cases of attacks by wild animals are on the increase in the area and called on the local authority and concerned organisations to intervene.
