Siaya police are holding a 50-year-old man after he was arrested for defiling and impregnating his wife’s 15-year-old niece at Pap-Kakan village, Mulaha sub-location in Siaya Township Ward.

The suspect, who has been identified as Micah Onyango Oure, was arrested after it was established that he had impregnated the girl who was under his care.

Mulaha sub-location Assistant Chief Marcelus Murunga said he received a tip-off from members of the public who informed him that the suspect had been having an affair with the young girl.

Upon inquiry, he established that the allegations were true and the girl was already pregnant.

He launched a search for the culprit and frog-matched him to the Siaya police station.

“We want to embark on a crackdown to weed out such characters in our jurisdictions. Any other culprits who will be found shall face the full force of the law,” the chief said.

Murunga added that they want to ensure that young girls are protected to be able to grow to their full potential, stressing that any form of violation of their rights shall not be condoned.

The administrator has therefore issued instructions to all the village coordinators in that sub-location to remain vigilant to ensure that such unscrupulous characters are dealt with accordingly.

The chief noted that the girl had been defiled for a long period and the man’s wife kept quiet about it despite having been aware of the matter.

He revealed that the girl was taken to the children’s protection unit at Siaya Police Station for security reasons.

He at the same time encouraged young girls to open up so that they can get help whenever they go through such inhuman acts.

Last year a Sub Location Assistant Chief was arraigned at the Siaya Law Courts over the alleged defilement of a minor.

Samuel Hezron Nyawalo, an Assistant Chief of Ramula Sub Location in East Gem, Siaya County, was accused of committing the offence contrary to Section 8(1) and (2) of the sexual offences Act No. 3 of 2006.

Appearing before Judge Margaret Wambani, the court heard that Nyawalo defiled a 14-year-old girl on the 4th and 5th of June 2022 in Ramula village.

“On the diverse date of 4th and 5th day of June 2022… you intentionally caused your penis to penetrate the vagina of a child aged 14 years,” the particulars of the offence read.

Nyawalo pleaded not guilty and was released on a Ksh200,000 bond.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has been alarmed by high cases of rape and defilement in the county.

“Majority of cases dealt with at Siaya Courts are sexually related and this issue must be addressed conclusively because it puts Siaya in a bad light,” he said.

Orengo said reports from courts on sexual abuse among school-going girls demand urgent interventions.

Speaking while meeting Siaya judges at his office, Orengo said it’s a form of crime that must be dealt with so as to restore sanity in society.

“There are very serious cases that the courts are dealing with and victims must be supported so as to tame suspects from compromising them,” Orengo said.

The county boss singled South East Alego as being notorious for the sexual-related cases targeting school-going girls, adding that the area is synonymous with bizarre drug abuse among young people.

Orengo further asked the Civil Society groups and religious leaders to take necessary measures to stop and prevent the recurrence of violence and sexual abuse against children in the society.

Such initiatives will ensure those responsible are held to account and reparations are paid to victims.
