Rigathi Gachagua charged with Ksh7.4 billion corruption-related cases

Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has been charged with six counts of corruption related to Ksh7.4 billion.

Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi, Gachagua denied charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property, Money laundering, conflict of interest and conspiracy to defraud Nyeri county government Sh 27 million.

The offences are alleged to have been committed in the year 2013 and 2020.

In the case, Gachagua is charged alongside nine others who are not in court.

The DPP through Victor Owiti wants the court to issue summons to have the nine present themselves in court to plead to the graft charges levelled against them by the state.

Owiti informed the court the police were only able to apprehended Gachagua on Friday.

After Gachagua denied the charges, Owiti has informed the court that they do not oppose his release on bail.

However, the defence team led by Kioko Kilukumi urged the court to grant his client his reasonable bail as he is not a flight risk being a member of Parliament.

He was later released on a cash bail of ksh12 million or a bond of ksh25 million.

The court also ordered him to deposit his passport with the court and not interfere with any witnesses.
