Raila visits Herder Institute, his alma mater in Germany

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has visited the Herder Institute, his alma mater in Leipzig, Germany.

In a statement on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Raila said the institution brought fond memories of his high school days.

"Visiting the Herder Institute, my alma mater in Leipzig, Germany, brought back memories of my high school days," Raila stated.

He also revealed that he visited his previous residential house in the school on Lumumba Street, and even interacted with the current occupants.

"From the familiar corridors to returning to my previous house on Lumumba Street and meeting with today's students... grateful for the journey and the enduring community at Herder," he added.

The Herder Institute was founded in 1951 and is now part of the Philological Faculty of the University of Leipzig.

The opposition leader was accompanied by Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung'aro.

Raila has been in Berlin, Germany, attending the World Forum on Future of Democracy, Tech, and Humankind.

Raila bid for AUC job

This comes at a time when Raila has announced his bid for the Africa Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, which has been backed by the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Addressing the press in Karen, Nairobi on Thursday, February 15, 2024, he stated that he decided after consulting widely among friends.

“The general Olusegun Obasanjo has said he is one of my closest friends in the continent and has intimated that should there be an interest I will be keen to serve the continent of Africa," Raila stated.

Raila also announced that he was ready to offer himself to be of service to the content whenever called upon.

“I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this African content when called upon. I believe that Africa is playing in a league that it should not play in and that it deserves better," Raila added.

The former prime minister also explained that he was the best candidate for the job because of his previous experience.

Academic requirements for AUC chairmanship

For one to become the AUC chairman, he must have a Master’s degree in Law, International Relations, Economics, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences or a closely related field from a recognized institution.

Having a PhD in Law, International Relations, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences or a closely related field from a recognized institution is an added advantage.

He/she is also required to have not less than 20 years of relevant professional and international experience with at least 10 years served in progressive senior leadership role(s) preferably in an intergovernmental organisation or national government/public service, international or regional institution.
