Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga on Monday, February 5, 2024, officially commissioned the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) headquarters in Kisumu.

The opposition leader, dressed in an all-white outfit, was accompanied by Kisumu governor Anyang Nyong'o and other political leaders.

"KIWASCO Headquarters was officially opened by Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH, the prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya (2008-2013) on February 5, 2024," a plaque at the entrance read.

Speaking after the commissioning of the facility, Raila expressed optimism that the move marks a step to enhance sustainability for the residents. He also called on citizens to protect water sources to enhance sustainability.

"Adequate investment and planning can make water readily available when or where it is needed, therefore we need to invest in the quality of water environs such as rivers and lakes which have been severely polluted by social and economic activities," Raila stated.

Founded in 2001, Kiwasco has been a fundamental project to the Kisumu residents since it began its operations in 2003.

The commissioning of the water company comes three months after receiving substantial funding of Ksh10 million from the World Wide Fund (WWF).

According to the company, the funding was a boost to the company's efforts to maintain a sustainable and reliable water supply to the city residents.

"We are excited to announce that we have received funding to the tune of Ksh10 million from the World Wide Fund for Nature. This generous grant will serve as a catalyst for our efforts in conserving and protecting vital water resource areas, especially in the face of climate change's adverse effects," the company's Managing Director, Thomas Odongo stated.

On his part, the county governor Anyang Nyong'o expressed gratitude to WWF for the generous donation saying it was a well-thought investment for the future of the county.

"As the Governor of Kisumu, I am deeply grateful for the generous donation from WWF. This funding is not just an investment in our environment; it's an investment in the well-being and future of our county.

“It will empower us to protect our vital water resources, combat climate change, and improve the lives of our residents. Together, we are creating a Kisumu that is sustainable, resilient, and thriving for generations to come,” Nyong'o said.
