President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured citizens that the government is well equipped to handle cyber crimes.

Speaking on Monday, June 13 as he commissioned DCI’s ultra-modern Forensic lab, Uhuru noted that mobile money transfers had led to the hike in cyber crimes in the country.

Kenyatta, therefore, vowed to deal with all kinds of syndicates including the SIM-swap and ‘Tuma kwa hii number’ cartels harassing Kenyans.

“A new wave of crime is equally emerging that involves things like Sim swapping and the typical ‘tuma kwa hii namba’ syndicate, all of which we must deal with properly,” the President said.

The national forensic laboratory located at the DCI headquarters will serve as a core forensic unit entrusted with carrying out Forensic Crime Scene Investigations to interrogate a scene of crime scientifically.

The facility is expected to fast-track necessary information on serious crimes including terrorism, murder, robbery with violence, cyber-crimes, and rape, among others.

"Qualified detectives in various academic scientific fields such as Computer Science, Pure Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics and Information Technology among others, have been deployed to offer their professional services in their respective areas of specialization,” the DCI said.

The unit is also instrumental in crime scene reconstruction, a forensic discipline that involves the experts in unravelling the series of events that surround the commission of a crime.

"The experts under this unit are capable of placing criminals to scenes of crime scientifically, through hidden fingerprint search development and recovery," DCI noted.

"Among other vital investigative roles, the unit also conducts vehicle identification and serial numbers verification and restoration in vehicles and firearms," DCI added.

This lab becomes the first one of its kind in Africa.
