Celebrated Kikuyu secular artist Jimmy Wayuni Githinji is dead.

The Benga musician died on Tuesday evening in a road accident on Thika-Nairobi superhighway.

According to Ruiru Sub County Police Commander Phineas Lirengera, the artist was pronounced dead on arrival at St John's Githurai 45 Hospital.

At the time of the accident, the musician was in the company of another artist, Jacksam Kibandi.

Wayuni is said to have been driving Kibandi home when their vehicle was reportedly rammed into on the side by a lorry near Kahawa Barracks.

Kibandi sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently recuperating.

Githinji, whose stage name is Wayuni, is known for several popular hit songs, including Airìtu a Ruiru, Anisa, Karenjù, Mama Sululu and Utuire Uhenagia.

Jacksam, on the other hand, is a gifted Kikuyu composer with several hits under his belt as well, among them Arume Hatuwezeki and Mwongoyo.
