Ten High Court judges have been promoted to the Court of Appeal in a list forwarded to the President for appointment by Chief Justice David Maraga.

Among those recommended are George Odunga, Mumbi Ngugi, Msagha Mbogholi and Weldon Korir. Others are Justice Francis Tuitott, Pauline Nyamweya, Hellen Omondi, Aggrey Mchelule, Jessie Lesiit and Joel Mwaura.

Maraga said the 10 and Imaana Laibuta, an advocate of the High Court, were the most suitable candidates.

“At least 113 applications were received after the advertisement for the 11 vacancies was announced, where 35 candidates were shortlisted. They are the most suitable candidates to be recommended for appointment," said Maraga.

The interviews were conducted from June 17 to June 27.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommendation will see the court fully constituted with the required number being 30. Currently, there are 19 judges.

Meanwhile, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) male representative to the JSC, Macharia Njeru, who had accompanied the CJ at the press conference yesterday, opposed the list.

Njeru said the commission objected to the LSK recommendation to include two lawyers from private practice for the Court of Appeal judges.
