A drinking spree among a peer group in Murang'a ended tragically after one of the youth died after consuming what is believed to be a lethal alcohol.

Leon Mbutu is said to have been in the company of his friends whom they were competing to drink but he was overwhelmed.

According to eyewitnesses who sought anonymity, Mbutu and his company went to one of the outlets in Mukangu town where the incident occurred.

"He said he can take three glasses and to prove to his friends, he did it. But when taking the third glass, we noticed he was not okay.

"We took him to a nearby bodaboda shed and laid him down to give him time to recover, but few minutes later we saw white foam oozing from his mouth," one of the eyewitnesses said.

Mbutu was rushed to nearby dispensary for first aid where they were advised to rush him to Murang'a County Hospital for better treatment but he died on the way.

When contacted for a comment, Kahuro Deputy County Commissioner Fredrick Mili admitted that illicit liquor is rampant in the area and that some officers have been colluding with the brewers in the illegal business.

He, however, said they have started conducting raids in the said dens promising to eradicate the illegal business.

He added that the administration officers who have been protecting brewer's will face disciplinary action.
