Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i on Thursday gazetted Monday, August 12, a public holiday.

In a Gazette Notice Number 7393 dated August 8, Matiang'i said: "It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares that Monday, the 12th August, 2019 be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Azha."

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah's (God's) command to sacrifice his son. Muslims around the world observe this event.

Eid al-Adha is an optional holiday.

Employment and holiday laws in Kenya allow employees to choose a limited number of holidays from a list of optional holidays. Some employees may choose to take the day off on this day, however, most offices and businesses remain open.
