Police in Uganda are holding three people who allegedly murdered a 23-year-old man who failed to pay Ush1000 (Sh32) alcohol debt.

Local media in Uganda reported that the man identified as Fred Obadiah failed to foot the bill of the alcohol he consumed at a bar in Rukungiri District in Western Uganda.

He reportedly ordered the drink from Komugisha’s bar and when he was done taking it, he attempted to run away before he was accosted by the three.

Eyewitnesses told police officers that the three nabbed Obadiah in Bagasheki’s home compound located in Bugarama village, Ihunga Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County.

“They tied him on a tree and beat him into a coma before one of Bagasheki’s neighbour’s contacted police,” Mr Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional Police boss told the media.

It took the intervention of neighbours to rescue and rush him to Kisizi Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“We have three people in our custody. I want to condemn this act as unlawful and ask the public to always use police and other authorities instead of taking laws in their hands because the police are out to assist Ugandans,” Maate said.

The body of Obadiah was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center mortuary and police at Rukungiri Central Police Station recorded the matter as murder case.
