A man who pleaded guilty to charges of having stolen sufurias and petticoats has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet said Ali Salim's punishment was meant to send a warning to other would-be offenders.
"I have considered the mitigation of the suspect, however, considering the circumstances under which the offence was committed and to deter others from committing a similar offence, Ali is hereby sentenced to serve two years imprisonment," he ruled.
Man asks for forgiveness
In his mitigation, Ali had asked the court for forgiveness arguing that he had learnt from his mistake and that he was a first-time offender.
He had been charged with housebreaking and stealing contrary to section 279 (b) of the Penal Code.
The charges read that on March 26, 2022, at Shonda area in Likoni sub-county within Mombasa County, Ali broke into Mawazo Halindi's house with intent to steal and thereafter stole 20 petticoats and four sufurias.
He was given 14 days to appeal his sentence.
