Nine Ethiopian nationals were on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, arrested in Karagita estate of Kayole Nairobi for allegedly being in the country illegally.

Police said the foreigners were arrested in an intelligence-led operation and are being processed for arraignment in court.

A police report seen by K24 Digital indicates officers on patrol received information that suspicious people were seen crossing the Ngong River heading to Karagita estate.

"A search was conducted and nine Ethiopian aliens were found in the country illegally without any documentation in their possession," the police report read in part.

91 Ethiopian immigrants arrested

Early this year, police arrested 91 Ethiopian aliens who were in the country illegally during a crackdown in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

The suspects of whom 41 were juveniles were arrested while awaiting to be smuggled to another country. They had attempted to escape from the captive area when the officers arrested them.

Smugglers prefer using the Kenyan route to ferry illegal immigrants to other destinations including Tanzania and South Africa, recent reports indicate.
