A man who allegedly murdered his elderly parents has been arrested.

The suspect Arthur Kasidi alias Doctor was arraigned before Mombasa senior magistrate Vincent Adet where detectives sought to have him detained for 14 days to allow police complete investigations.

In his sworn affidavit Police Constable Samwel Kisiangani attached to Jomvu Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was investigating a case where two elderly couples namely, Jonathan Mzungu, 70, and Rehema Tunje, 60, were allegedly murdered by their son.

Prosecution Counsel Hillary Ishao told the court that preliminary investigations had revealed that the two deceased persons were murdered by persons well-known to them due to a long-standing land dispute.

Ishao further informed the court that there was a need to have the suspect detained, since key witnesses were yet to record statements, and the suspect was yet to undergo a mental assessment test.

“Postmortem on the deceased bodies has not been conducted to ascertain the cause of death and how they were killed. We are afraid that the respondent might interfere with other witnesses who have not recorded their statements,” said Ishao.

Man detained

According to preliminary investigations, the two were beaten to death.

The magistrate ordered the suspect to be detained at Changamwe police station to allow police complete the investigations.

The matter will be mentioned on February 8.
