ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owalo has today launched the government-sponsored free public hotspots at Ahero market in Kisumu county.

Through a post shared on his official Twitter account, the CS acknowledged that the exercise was part of an ongoing countrywide provision of internet connectivity to citizens in line with the Kenya Kwanza development plan.

"We recognize that we are living in very fast-changing times. The world is going through the Fourth Industrial Revolution and revolutions don’t wait for anybody. Another two decades from now, it will be very difficult to recognize the world as we have known it in recent times," the CS stated.

"It is already difficult to believe that sending a letter from Ahero to Mombasa used to take as long as 7-to-10 days, and even two weeks. It would take another two weeks to get replies if the person wrote back immediately. We have already forgotten about public telephone call boxes, and even the Simu Ya Jamii at the start of the 2000s. The landline telephone is going. The telefax is gone. The typewriter is a thing of the past. The cyclostyle is dead. Those who don’t board the digital platform will be forgotten behind. " the CS added.

He further stated that the government had embarked on providing 25,000 hotspots to the public at the bottom of the pyramid so that they become part of the emerging digital economy.

Leaders present include; UDA regional coordinators, Phares Odira, Mike Malomba, Sunday Oyollo Luke Kirindo, Jacqueline Mwenesi, Ahero DCC Nyamawi Chaka, Deputy Governor Kisumu County, Mathew Owili, Prof. PLO Lumumba, LBDA Chairman Dianga Waore, Jack Ranguma, Jared Kopiyo, Aloo Ogeka, Dr. Mark Matunga.

Others are Tony Yogo Yogo, Betty Adera, Vicky Onderi, Mark Rabudi, Kennedy Obuya, Valentine Anyango, Jacqueline Omiti, Billian Ojiwa, Valentine Ogongo, Atieno Otieno, Richard Opar, Joseph Arwa, Pauline Oyoo, Pauline Omogi, Elizabeth Sila, Joseph Osano and Local MCAs, Bill Odhiambo, Peter Oiko, Maurice Ngeta, Moses Ochola and Ken Ooko.
