There was ululation and jubilation in various parts of Kirinyaga county as residents celebrated the picking of Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua as Azimio la Umoja's running mate ahead of the August 9 polls.

In Gichugu constituency where Martha Karua hails from, residents flocked to public premises like hotels where they closely followed the Kenyatta International Conference Center(KICC) meeting where Karua was announced as Raila Odinga's running mate.

They welcomed the decision saying that the appointment is a giant step towards recognizing women in leadership.

"We are very happy. We are extremely grateful to have the first woman deputy president come from Gichugu constituency. And from now henceforth, we are all under Azimio la Umoja coalition," Sicily Wanjiru, a resident in Kianyaga town stated.

"We are supporting Raila Odinga 100 per cent because he has recognized one of us, that is a great show of respect," Antony Kimani from Kiamutugu shopping centre noted.

They also said that the former Gichugu MP has never been involved in corruption and that she does not condone the vice that has negatively affected the Kenyan economy in the recent party adding that the picky of Martha Karua as a running mate is a milestone towards achieving the gender equality rule.

"We have been praying hard for her to be picked as Raila's running mate because she is not on a long list of leaders who have allegedly been linked to corruption," Ann Karimi, a Kutus town resident noted.

Gichugu constituency Member of Parliament candidate on independent ticket Dr Njagi Makangi described the former Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, as an astute leader who always stands her ground.

"Martha Karua stood with former President Mwai Kibaki during the 2007 general elections until the end," he said.

Dr Makanga said that the Azimio duo of Raila Odinga and Martha Karua has the ability to end corruption in the country.

"We have never heard of a scenario where either Raila Odinga was taken to court over allegations of corruption, that means that they are the only leaders who can be able to fight corruption," he said.

"Once we elect the duo, they will be able to fight corruption and initiate development projects so that Kenyans can be able to enjoy the fruits of good leadership," Makanga further stated.
