Amid the raging heavy rains and floods in the country, Kenya Railways has suspended a number of its services.

In the capital city, Nairobi, railway services have been affected in areas like Dandora and Mwiki, and areas like Naivasha, Sagana, and Thika have also been affected elsewhere.

"We wish to notify members of the public that, owing to the heavy rains being experienced around the country, there are increased instances of overflooding and washaways along the rivers.

"The flood waters have found their way onto the railway network, affecting our operations in the Dandora-Mwiki, Thika-Mitubiri, Sagana-Murang'a, Turbo, and Naivasha sections," Kenya Railways said in a statement.

Services to Kisumu and Nanyuki have consequently been suspended in a move aimed at ensuring safety for commuters.

"As a result, we may, on occasion, suspend trains in areas we consider risky. In line with this, the Ruiru and Limuru commuter trains, the Nairobi Terminus to Ngong commuter train, the Kisumu Safari train, as well as the Nanyuki Safari train, have been suspended due to the above-mentioned reasons," it continued.

However, commuter trains serving the routes of Lukenya, Syokimau, and Embakasi Village have resumed. The Nairobi-Mombasa is the only service that has not been affected so far.

"In addition to this, the Madaraka Express Passenger Service to and from Nairobi and Mombasa is not affected and is operating as per the normal schedules.

"We urge our customers on the routes affected by the suspension to bear with us as we work to restore normalcy. We wish to assure the public that the safety of our passengers will always remain paramount to us," the Kenya Railways' statement added.
