Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, has emphasized the need for cross-sectoral and cross-border cooperation for health security.
Speaking on Wednesday, 22, May 2024 in Nairobi, Muthoni said that the focus was on implementing a one-health approach to enhance health in the Horn of Africa.
Adding that the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, noting COVID-19's lessons on integrated disease surveillance.

“Over 75% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic and stressed early detection and prevention,” she said.
The PS further explained that Kenya's susceptibility to zoonotic diseases due to its geography and interactions among livestock, wildlife, and humans was discussed.
“Zoonotic diseases cost Kenya around Ksh618 billion annually, with outbreaks like Rift Valley fever and anthrax posing significant threats,” she said.
“Kenya's One Health initiatives include the Zoonotic Disease Unit, national and county-level coordination, joint research, and disease contingency plans,” she explained.
The Field Epidemiology Training Program's joint training of veterinary and medical officers was highlighted.
Calling for international collaboration, Muthoni emphasized the need for information exchange and synchronized response strategies.
The event aimed to align national policies, secure political commitment, and mobilize resources for joint health efforts.
