IEBC’s Gichugu constituency Returning Officer dies

Geoffrey Gitobu, the IEBC official in charge of Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga County, is dead.

Gitobu is said to have collapsed and died on Monday, August 22 outside the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

Gitobu served as the Returning Officer for Gichugu constituency in the just concluded August 9 general election.

At the time of his sudden death, he had taken a three-day off from his workplace in Kirinyaga to visit his family in Nanyuki.

A source told a local daily that the officer visited IEBC offices in Nanyuki to print some documents on Monday. As he waited to be attended to, he collapsed outside the electoral body's offices and was rushed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The cause of his death was not immediately revealed.

Embakasi East Returning Officer found dead

The shocking death of Gitobu comes a week after IEBC lost yet another official in unclear circumstances.

Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Musyoka was found dead in Kajiado on Monday, August 15, four days after he went missing while on official duty.

Musyoka's body was discovered in a thicket in Oloitoktok, Kajiado county.

Police said the 53-year-old could have been murdered elsewhere and his body dumped in Loitoktok, over 70km away.
