The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has began preparations for the upcoming World Environment Day slated for June 5.
In a statement, NEMA said that the national steering committee was meeting in Nairobi to organise the logistics involved in the celebrations.
"The Committee is planning for the celebrations to be held on June 5 at the University of Embu in Embu County," the authority stated.

With extensive media coverage, the event aims to bring together civil society and private sector organizations actively engaged in the environmental economy, further emphasizing Kenya's commitment to addressing environmental challenges, particularly pollution.
Environment day
Last year’s world environment day celebrations were held at Lake Nakuru National Park, Nakuru County. The theme “Solution for plastic pollution” under the campaign slogan #BeatPlasticPollution aimed to reduce plastic waste.
22,000 Tons of waste are produced in Kenya daily, and plastic is one of the largest waste streams.
During the event, CS Tuya noted that the World Environment Day theme “Solutions to plastic pollution” raises pertinent questions on how people interact with plastics, production, consumption, and disposal. She highlighted the need for targeted and sustained enforcement of the law on the ban on single-use plastics.
The national event witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including the government, diplomatic community, private sector associations, academic institutions, entertainers, and the First Lady.
The celebration is a platform to showcase collaborative efforts and innovative approaches to promote environmental sustainability.
World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th each year following a global resolution of the UN General Assembly during the first world environment conference held in Stockholm in 1972.
The event comes after a concerted effort by the government to plant more trees.
President William Ruto has said the tree planting exercise will be done daily for the next six months, adding that each ministry will have its own days for planting trees.
“Our country has been affected by climate change, and one way to mitigate the negative impacts is to conserve our environment by planting trees. Today, more than 200 million trees will be planted across the country, and the exercise will continue till we hit our 15 billion trees,” the president said during a tree planting exercise in Muranga.
