Residents of Mangoita village, Chemaner ward, Bomet county are counting losses after elephants stormed the village and destroyed their crops.

The elephants are reported to have been camping in the village for a week now causing panic among the residents.

Joseph Towet, a resident of Mangoita, says they will not harvest anything since no crop has been spared by the wild animals.

He claims that the current hard economy will continue hitting them since they expect nothing from their farms.

Towet said they have informed the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers but no action has been taken.

He said apart from the losses, school children have been missing lessons because they fear going to school early in the morning and in the evening

"We want the government to compensate us. We have lost maize, cabbages, beans and even bananas. We have nothing remaining in our farms," Towet said.

Mangoita village borders Mau Forest hence making it easier for the animals to invade the farms.

The residents are now calling on the government to put measures that will prevent wild animals from crossing into the villages.

"We want the government to put up an electric fence or dig a trench to block the animals from causing havoc in the villages," Nancy Towet, another resident, added.

The area Member of County Assembly Richard Ruto has asked the KWS officers to ensure the 10 families affected are compensated.

"The wild animals are very important in generating revenue from tourists but the lives of our people should be protected. We urge KWS officers to take up their responsibility," Ruto.

He asked the headteachers of the neighbouring Lelkatet Secondary and Mangoita Primary schools to adjust the schools' timetables until the situation is addressed.
