A rogue police officer opened fire inside a wines and spirits joint in Narok after a scuffle with an attendant over an unpaid bill.

According to a police report, the cop identified as Dennis Imai went to enjoy his drink at JJ Wines and Spirits on Sunday evening April 7, 2024, and his bill totalled Ksh2,220.

The officer however could not settle the bill and the barmaid Jackline Jemeli confiscated his phone.

"Dennis Imai visited JJ Wines and Spirits at around 6 pm on Sunday when Jackline Jemeli immediately snatched his phone for the previous beer bill," part of the police report stated.

The officer left the joint and returned half an hour later clad in full police uniform and armed with a rifle.

Imai asked to be given his phone back and when the attendant failed to comply with his order he opened fire inside the wines and spirit.

"He opened one round of fire before a boda-boda rider [whom he went to the joint with] whisked him away," the report said.

No injuries were reported.

Police could not recover the spent cartridge, suspecting the rogue officer recovered it before he fled.

Barmaid killed

The incident in Narok comes months after another barmaid was killed by a rogue cop who refused to pay his bill.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2023, when Nicholas Musau refused to settle a bill of Ksh16,000, leading to a confrontation with the barmaid.

The disagreement became violent when the officer threatened to shoot dead the barmaid identified as Ann Maina.

The rogue cop ultimately reached out for his gun and started shooting when other revellers in the bar intervened.

The officer attached to Nakuru Central Police Station went ahead and shot dead the barmaid and in the process also injured three others.

The injured were rushed to the Nakuru Level Five Hospital while the deceased was taken to the facility’s morgue.

Another person succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.

In January 2024, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved murder charges against the police officer over the killing of two people at a bar in Nakuru.

The DPP in a statement on January 10, 2024, said investigations conducted by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) found Musau culpable of the murder of the two victims.

The prosecution affirmed that there was sufficient evidence to sustain murder charges against the officer.
