Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) premier league leaders Butali Sugar Warriors dropped points while Kenya Police collected maximum points to move within a point off the champions in the two topflight matches played at the City Park Stadium over the weekend.

Butali, who were held to a barren draw by Green Sharks are on 15 points while Police were 1-0 winners over 2016 winners Strathmore University Gladiators, moved to within a point of the leaders.

Titus Kimutai scored the only goal of the match in the final quarter of the match for a much-needed win over the law enforcers who were held by United States International University - Africa  (USIU-A) from their last league match last month.

Patrick Mugambi-led side have four wins, two draws and the 2-1 fall to Butali in April.

“I think we played well and contained our opponents better. Not conceding was yet another big positive given our back line had conceded many goals before the match,” said Mugambi

League matches were resuming after break to pave way for the Betty Tioni Memorial Tournament held at the Greensteds International School, Nakuru the previous weekend.

In the Saturday match pitting Sharks and the holders Butali once again proved how competitive the top-flight league is becoming.

The match witnessed high tactical awareness from both coaches, first it was the turn of Butali on the attack before but had to be pushed back in the second and third quarter where they had to devise plans to contain Shark raids. Butali have four wins and three draws from their opening seven matches.
