A 67-year-old man in Funyula in Busia County was attacked and killed by a hippopotamus while fishing in the shores of Lake Victoria.

According to the family of the deceased, the man left home to fish at Bisichu beach on the shores of Lake Victoria, but unfortunately did not come back home.

"My husband was going to watch football but decided to go fishing at Lake Victoria where he met his death, the hippo attacked and killed him," the deceased wife said.

However, residents embarked on a search, but the deceased's body was discovered with deep bite wounds.

Area residents claim that hippo attacks has become rampant, and further said that they feed on their plantation and livestock.

The residents are now calling on the Kenyan wildlife services (KWS) to come to their rescue.

"There is a need for KWS to intervene before more lives are lost," an area resident said.

Residents also blamed KWS for being negligent in offering services.

The area residents now want the wildlife services to open an office close to Busia where they can be channelling their grievances.
