Two people were killed and several others injured after a school bus rammed into market stalls in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, on Thursday, December 29.
The driver of the bus that was heading to Nakuru for the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness end-year celebrations presided over by Prophet David Owuor is said to have veered off the road and rammed into kiosks before rolling several times.
Nyamira North Sub-County Police boss Patrick Ngeiywa said one person died on the spot while the other one succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.
"The bus hit a culvert and veered off the road, it flattened at least 15 stalls in the market," the police boss said.
Those who were injured were rushed to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital, and Ekerenyo Sub-county Hospital in Nyamira North.
The end-year celebrations are held annually at Menengai Grounds in Nakuru from December 30.
Separate incident
Elsewhere, two people died on the spot after a road accident in Kariguini along Kenol -Murang'a road.
The accident is said to have occurred after a pickup heading towards Kenol had a head-on collision with a lorry which was coming from the opposite direction.
The driver of the pickup and his passenger died on the spot while those in the lorry escaped unhurt.
According to eyewitnesses, the pickup driver was attempting to overtake a matatu and consequently hit the lorry.
They noted that the area had become a deadly black spot owing to the number of accidents that have occurred in recent months.
"About two months ago, two accidents occurred at the same place and lives were lost," one of the witnesses stated.
Consequently, the area residents have appealed to relevant authorities to take their plea into consideration and have put safety measures to help drivers observe road safety.
"The road was being re-carpeted but the marking was not done neither do we have road signs," a witness added.
The bodies of the two were moved to General Kago Mortuary in Thika and the vehicles were towed to Maragua Police station as investigations begin.
