City lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has hit out at Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye who called on his citizens to stone gay people.

During a question-and-answer session with journalists on Friday, Ndayishimiye condemned gays and said their acceptance would bring a curse to society.

"If you want to attract a curse to the country, accept homosexuality.

"I even think that these people, if we find them in Burundi, it is better to lead them to a stadium and stone them. And that cannot be a sin," he said.

His comments attracted widespread reaction, and one of those to air his discontent over the president's utterances is Kenyan lawyer Ahmednasir.

The former Law Society of Kenya president said the East African nation has more pinching problems that should be addressed, and same-gender engagement is not one of them.

"Surely Burundi has more pressing priorities than stoning gay couples.

"As one of the poorest countries in the world, why doesn't he borrow his neighbour Paul Kagame's development manual and rebuild his country and uplift the dare living standards of his people," Ahmednassir's reaction on X, read.

Meanwhile, Ndayishimiye's comments were the latest show of wider intolerance of LGBT people in East Africa.

In May, Uganda passed a law that carries the death sentence for certain categories of same-sex offences and lengthy jail sentences for others.
