Traffic flow along the Mahiu-Naivasha Road was on Wednesday morning disrupted after a head-on collision involving two trailers at Governor area.

A statement from the National Police Service (NPS) indicated that the two vehicles burst into flames in the early morning incident.

All casualties were evacuated and are currently recuperating at the Naivasha Sub-county Hospital. The police, however, didn't reveal the exact number of casualties.

"A serious traffic accident occurred this morning at Governor area along Maai Mahiu-Naivasha Road due to a head-on collision involving two trailers. Due to the impact, both vehicles veered off the road bursting into flames," the statement read in part.

"Officers from Maai Mahiu Police Station responded swiftly ensuring all casualties were evacuated and are currently recuperating at the Naivasha Sub-county Hospital."

The police service urged members of the public to exercise caution while on the roads during the festive season.

"We urge all road users to take personal responsibility and exercise caution especially during this festive and rainy season by adhering to traffic rules on overtaking and speed limits," police added.

The accident comes a day after eight people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a grisly accident at the Ngata bridge along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The accident involved two 14-passenger matatus and a trailer.

Speaking to journalists at the scene of the accident, Nakuru West sub-county police commander Edwin Otieno stated that the trailer that was en route to Nakuru City veered off the road and hit a matatu that was heading to Kapsabet.

"The two matatus had 14 passengers each on board. 8 perished in this accident and 20 have been rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

"All the injured people have been rushed to the hospital where they are undergoing treatment. So far our officers have been dispatched to various places.

"I will be very categorical to appeal to KENHA to at least do something on this highway. Moreso around Ngata bridge because it has become a black spot. We need a footbridge and bumps to be erected along this road because it has become a black spot," he said.

The Ministry of Transport has since directed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to take necessary action to forestall any such accidents.

According to Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen the action to be undertaken include; installation of 'Observe Lane Discipline' signs from both approaches of the three lanes, installation of 50KPH speed limit signs on both approaches of the three lanes.

Murkomen also directed the use of police and speed guns to enforce the measures.

"In the long-term, by April 2023, I have instructed the Authority to commence construction of an additional lane and separate the flow stream of traffic with jersey barriers in the median akin to the dualled Molo river-Sachangwan-Kibunja section," the Roads CS said.
