Four persons have been reported missing after a five-storey building collapsed in Uthiru, Nairobi County.

According to Nairobi Disaster Management Chief Officer Bramwel Simiyu, the four include a nanny and two children from one household, as well as a 10-year-old girl from another residence.

"A five-story building has collapsed in Nairobi's Mountain View Ward, Westlands Sub County, along Naivasha Road, near the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Nairobi City County emergency response team was swiftly deployed to the scene and continue to assist in evacuating residents to safety. As of 10:00 pm, all the families except four persons have been accounted for," Simiyu stated.

"The four missing persons include a nanny and two children from one household, as well as a 10-year-old girl from another residence. The father of the girl has arrived at the scene and informed the responders that the girl was home alone."

Simiyu says rescue operations are ongoing as the Nairobi City County Government mobilises specialised equipment.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown.

"Detailed investigations will commence tomorrow," Simiyu added.

Kenya Red Cross says 10 people with minor injuries have been attended to at the scene by the Red Cross Action Team.
