Nyahururu: Man takes own life inside police cell

Police in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, have launched investigations into the death of a 26-year-old man who was found dangling from the ventilation grills of the police cells.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, Gideon Mwangi had been arrested on Thursday, September 1, 2022, after he threatened to hack his father and brother with an axe.

He was being held at Ngarua Police Station where he was found to have committed suicide.

“While walking around the cells, Constable Samuel Oloshoe reported that he found the body of the deceased, Gideon Mwangi Mioge aged 26 years dangling from the ventilation of the cells,” the police report seen by K24 Digital read in part.

The axe that the deceased was intending to harm his brother and father was recovered during his arrest.

The body was moved to the Sipili Nursing Home morgue pending an autopsy.

Elsewhere in Menengai, Nakuru County, a prisoner is expected to be arraigned after he escaped from prison before being cornered by a mob and rescued by the police.

In a police report, the accused Vincent Ochieng Gaa slipped out of the cells while two prison wardens were exchanging duty.

Constable Robin Kigen was taking over report office and cell sentry duties from Constable Rose Bore when the culprit escaped.

Constable Bore raised an alarm and they gave him a chase, members of the public responded and cornered him at the Kambi ya Moto area before they beat him up.

“The victim was rescued by the police from the mob justice which cornered him at Kambi ya Moto centre after he slipped from the cells while officers were exchanging duty,” the police report stated.

He was rescued by the officers and taken back to the cells but developed breathing difficulties and was rushed to Familia Bora Clinic where he was referred to PGH Nakuru where he is admitted in a stable condition.

Vincent was arrested for the offence of burglary and stealing and was supposed to have been presented to court last week on Thursday, September 1, 2022.
