Man, 70, lynched, burnt to death over alleged land dispute with neighbour

A 70-year-old-man has died after he was lynched and burnt by members of public in Minori village in Mbeere South Sub-county, Embu County on Thursday.

It is suspected that the man had land dispute with his neighbour.

Mbeere South Sub-county police commander Gregory Mutiso said the man identified as Agostino Njeru went to his neighbor who he alleged that he had grabbed his land and started demolishing his house.

After demolition at around 3pm, members of public got agitated by his actions after learning what he had done to his neighbor then they cornered him while at his home before lynching him.

It is alleged that members of public poured petrol on him before setting him ablaze.

Mutiso said the deceased's wife got minor injuries and was rushed to Embu Level 5 Hospital.

The commander noted that the old man was living with his wife and grandson who managed to escape when his grandparents were accosted.

Mutiso said all the deceased's belongings were burnt including his houses, two vehicles and one motorcycle.

Before the firebrigade moved from Embu town to the area which is about 30-kilometers away, already almost everything had burnt down.

The deceased body was taken to Embu level 5 hospital as investigations kick off.

The police boss said so far no suspect has been arrested after the incident.
