Two people died on the spot while 16 others, including a nephew of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, sustained serious injuries in two separate accidents that occurred at Shauri Moyo area on Kilifi-Mombasa Highway.
The first accident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle that collided head-on with a truck while the second one involved another personal car and a matatu.
Witnesses said that the car in which Joho's nephew was travelling in collided head-on with a matatu not far from the scene of the first accident where he was headed to after he learnt that his sister had been involved in a road crash with her husband.

Ambulances from the Kilifi County government and Mombasa Cement company responded quickly and took the injured to Kilifi hospital.
Joho's relative, who was in critical condition, was airlifted by a helicopter from the hospital for specialized treatment in Mombasa County.
Kilifi Health minister Charles Dadu confirmed that two of the victims had died, including a mother who was traveling in the matatu to Mtwapa with her child.
He said that the child is in a stable condition.
Dadu said three people are still in critical condition but under the close watch of the medical personnel while the other 13 are responding well to treatment.
