Wajir North MP Ahmed Ibrahim Abdisalan survived an attack on Thursday after gunmen interrupted a census sensitization meeting.

The meeting, held near a mosque at Masalale, was attended by census staff and local residents.

Mr Abdisalan has been touring the constituency to assess preparations for the 2019 census and the drought situation

As the MP was addressing locals on the importance of participating in the national census, they heard gunshots fired from a distance.

Mr Abdisalan's security detail responded, firing in the air to warn the would-be attackers.

As the melee ensued, the security detail whisked the MP to Malkagufu village.

The gunmen burnt down one of the vehicles belonging to a local staff and destroyed another belonging to Malkagufu ward representative.

No one was injured during the attack.

At the Malkagufu village, the MP and the county team held a meeting over security concerns.

Thursday's attack comes after the North Eastern Regional Command Mohamed Birik assured locals of their security during the census drive.
