Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his family on Saturday led worshippers in celebrating the anointing service of the St John Baptist chapel in Ichaweri, Kiambu county.

The church, a new landmark along Kenyatta Road, was built by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta under the foundations of the Ichaweri Chapel established by the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1971.

The consecration mass was presided by The Most Reverend Philip A. Anyolo, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Nairobi alongside other members of the clergy.

"St. John the Baptist Chapel is the 9th Church in the Arch-angel Mutomo Parish. The picturesque building is a site to behold, depicting an antique cathedral, with finesse wood finishings, and stained glass windows illustrating service to God and humanity. A virtue Archbishop Anyolo emphasized in his sermon," a statement shared by the former president's office reads in parts.

Speaking during the mass, Mama Ngina noted that the move to put up the church was a decision made together with her family in honour of the love that Mzee Jomo had for God and the people.

“His desire was to have a church within the community where people could gather together and worship. He had just come from detention in Maralal, Samburu County," she said.

On his part, former President Kenyatta lauded Mama Ngina for her determination and confidence in ensuring that the church was built to completion.

While lauding the former First Lady, Kenyatta also acknowledged all those who participated in making the dream come true.
