Eight robbers raided the Muthaiga residence of billionaire-industrialist, Dr. Manu Chandaria, and robbed the family of Sh600,000 and jewelry of an unknown amount on Monday morning.

It was not immediately established how the robbers accessed the residence located in one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in the city and managed to disarm an Administration Police (AP) officer of his G3 rifle.

The robbers are said to have confronted the watchmen at around 1 am and took their uniforms.

They then proceeded to where the officer was stationed and disarmed before tying him with a rope.

After disarming the AP officer, the thugs went Chandaria's bedroom where they confronted him and ransacked the room.

They robbed the couple of the cash, jewelry and other valuables.

The three guards were arrested who were manning the home were detained at Huruma, Kariobangi and Muthaiga police stations respectively following the incident/

Officers drawn from different units, including Recce Squad were involved in the operation headed by the Nairobi Region police boss Rashid Yakub to flush out the thugs.

The G3 rifle was later recovered within the expansive compound.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations to establish whether it was an ordinary robbery as a result of the negligence of the officers or whether it was a case of collusion.

Such incidents have not been reported in the area where several prominent individuals including former President Mwai Kibaki, Mama Ngina Kenyatta and businessman Jimmy Wanjigi among others reside.

The police boss revealed that preliminary investigations point to a possible insider job.
