The five -- four men and a woman -- were arrested in a rented house in Kanduyi Market, located on the outskirts of Bungoma Town, on Thursday night (June 18).

Bungoma South OCPD, Wilson Nanga, told K24 Digital that police followed crucial leads, which led them to the suspects’ residence.

It is alleged that the five robbed businessman Karuga of his Ksh2 million, and, thereafter, shot him to death at Keringet Hotel in Bungoma Town on June 8.

“We recovered household items worth Ksh500, 000 when we raided their house on Thursday night,” said Nanga.

Handcuffs, police uniforms and boots were also found at the suspects’ residence.

“We are now pursuing leads to where they hid the gun believed to have been used in killing a Bungoma-based trader,” added Nanga.

The Bungoma South police boss said four out of the five suspects are Kenyans, whereas one is a Ugandan national. All of them are being held in lawful custody at Bungoma Police Station.

Businessman Karuga was buried last Tuesday, June 16 at his rural home in Soy, Likuyani Sub-County, Kakamega County.

Karuga, who owned Shell Petrol Station in Bungoma Town among other businesses, is survived by a widow and four children.
