Gloria Adhiambo, who scored 389 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams and emerged top at Nyalgunga primary school, is staring at an uncertain future after receiving Form One placement in a boys' national school.

Adhiambo, who was carrying her result slip and enrolment form from Lenana Boys, was in deep thought at the time K24 Digital made our way to their house at Nyalgunga.

Her dream of pursuing secondary education has been derailed by the school she was enlisted and a lack of school fees.

Adhiambo and the family, who were engulfed in song and dance when they received the calling letter, are now stranded and pleading with Siaya education stakeholders to come to their aid.

"I was happy to receive a calling letter from Nairobi not knowing its contents. I prayed for better schools, Kisumu Girls, Alliance Girls and Statehe Girls but not Lenana Boys," she said amid tears.

"We were googling the school through my mum's phone and it's through it that we came to learn that it's a boys' school. We appeal to the County Director of Education to consider raising the issue with the Ministry to correct the anomaly," she said.

Form one placement aside, Gloria Adhiambo's family is also grappling with financial challenges.

"Although God saw me through my primary education for eight years and rewarded me with good results, I still have challenges of getting fee to facilitate my secondary education," Gloria Adhiambo said.

"My mum struggled to pay fees in primary school, I do not think she will manage to pay secondary school fees. We equally do not know how to approach well-wishers for financial support," she added.

The girl's mother Margaret Awuor Alowe stated that she approached well-wishers to raise money for her daughter's school fees but her efforts bore no fruits.

"We sort for assistance in vain. Most of those we thought could respond positively to our distress call claimed they were already burdened. Others urged us to correct the form one selection mess before returning to them for assistance," Alowe said.
