Detectives in Kajiado are investigating a bizarre incident where unknown assailants wounded cows by inflicting deep cuts using a sharp object at Rimpa, Ong'ata Rongai, Kajiado County.

It is reported that the incident happened on Saturday, July 16, 2022, in broad daylight when unknown assailants attacked the cattle while grazing in an open field before fleeing.

Three of the 11 cows injured were left in critical condition to the chagrin of the owner who was only notified by people known to him over the incident.

John Sokoine Ole Lengisa says the incident is devastating and has left him shocked and counting losses, coming at a time when farmers in Kajiado are facing tough times due to a ravaging drought.

"I am so sad that someone can do such an inhuman act. The cattle have been grazing in the area which has very little dry grass for some time now. It is not a restricted area since it is just along the road. It is disheartening and confusing," Sokoine lamented.

Herdsmen have condemned the incident saying the agitated party would have instead detained the cattle and mutually resolved any outstanding issue.

"During the drought season we as farmers are always cautious and we do not just enter into people's farms to graze. We liaise with farm owners and pay for pasture. We also respect signage by land owners warning farmers against grazing in specified areas. We want the incident thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to book to avert such happening in future, "Noah Simanga said.

Confirming the incident, Ngong sub-county police commander Joakim Mecha said detectives have got crucial leads that will lead to the arrest of suspects.

Mecha, who termed the incident as cruelty to animals, warned that the suspects will face the wrath of the law warning that authorities will not entertain such heinous acts.

"There is no justification whatsoever as to why a person can harm an animal with such cruelty. So far we have crucial information that will help us nab the suspects who we have already profiled. This is a serious matter that we will address soon by bringing to book the criminals, "Mecha insisted.
