Three morans on Sunday night visited Archers Police Post in Samburu County, asked an officer who was on duty for drinking water before they shot him dead.

In a police report seen by this reporter, the three unidentified morans shot Police Constable Moses Mwambia while he was fetching water for them from a water tank at the station.

According to Peter Lolkireri who is the officer in charge of Lerata Police Post, he was outside the station making a phone call while other officers were on foot patrol when the incident happened.

“He was out of the post about 200 meters searching for telephone network and other officers were on patrol within Namunyak area and its environs when he heard the gunshots emanating from the post,” the report read in part.

This prompted Lolkireri to reach out to two Namuyak Conservancy Rangers who were patrolling along the Lerata – Wamba Road who all rushed to the station.

It is then that they found the lifeless body of the officer lying beside the tank with two gunshot wounds.

A security team that was under the command of the Inspector of Police only identified as Korir visited the scene where they established that three suspected morans had gone to the post and asked for drinking water.

“The officer proceeded to the water tank to give them water and it is at that time when he was fatally shot. On further inquiries, it was established that it was a revenge attack on security officers based in the region,” the report revealed.

It further stated that the morans are unhappy with the recently tightened security patrols within Archers Post where some bandits were recently shot dead and several injured.

“It is also believed that the recent recovery of stolen stock from the morans is a contributing factor to the revenge attack,” the report read in part.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Isiolo Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting postmortem.

A patrol team is currently conducting a search for the bandits within the area with the aim of making arrests.
