President William Ruto will on Sunday, November 6, 2022, head to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to attend the United Nations (UN) framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC).

He will lead the Kenyan delegation to the 27th edition of the conference of the parties (COP 27).

In a press release shared by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the Head of State will champion stronger global solidarity toward effective climate action and highlight policies and strategies on the global carbon market.

"The president is expected to rally the globe toward more ambitious climate action, seeking implementation and honouring of commitments made over the past 30 years by countries with the greatest responsibilities for accumulating greenhouse gases causing global warming. He will also be outlining Kenya's policies and strategies to tap into the global carbon market," the statement reads in parts.

He will also highlight the plight of African nations facing the adverse effects of climate change from the gases emitted by developed countries.

"Coming in at a time of interlocking crisis including energy and food security, and in the midst of the worst drought in 40 years affecting Kenya and the Horn of Africa region,

"President Ruto is expected to make a strong case for Kenya and Africa with African nations still bearing the brunt of the impacts of emissions from the developed world," the statement added.

Mohammed also acknowledged that Ruto's attendance goes in line with his development agenda and commitment to mitigating climate change.

"Demonstrably, climate change mitigation and adaptation is at the front and centre of President Ruto's development agenda, having described it as a phenomenon complicating the roadmap towards socio-economic transformation and achievement of sustainable development goals in Kenya and Africa," he stated.
