President William Ruto, accompanied by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base today May 22, 2024, ahead of meeting with his host US President Joe Biden.

Ruto and his wife were warmly received by US First Lady Jill Biden at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, (some 33 km from Washington D.C) on Wednesday morning (note that Nairobi is 7 hours ahead of the US capital).

The arrival in the US capital marks the second phase of Ruto's America state visit, following a two-day stop in Atlanta where he actively promoted Kenya as a premier investment destination in Africa.

The visit, marking a significant moment in Kenya-US relations, officially kicked off with a grand reception, underscoring the importance of the bilateral discussions and engagements scheduled over the coming days.

The arrival ceremony featured the traditional pomp and circumstance befitting a state visit, highlighting the diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Ruto's itinerary

The Kenyan President and his US counterpart Joe Biden are set to engage in a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, security, and education.

Ruto is today expected to meet with a congressional delegation. He will also hold discussions at Capital Hill (US legislative House equivalent to Parliament).

On Thursday, President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto will lay a wreath at Arlington Cemetery to honour dead American soldiers and other historic figures. They will also hold a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden to highlight development opportunities.
