Popular online gig platform Remotasks has blocked access for users in Kenya amid reports of pulling out from the country.
Kenyan users attempting to access the Remotasks website were met with an error message, indicating they had been blocked from accessing the site.
According to screenshots shared on social media platforms, Remotasks reportedly notified affected users via email, stating that the platform would no longer be accessible in Kenya as of March 8, 2024.

"We are reaching out with an important announcement regarding Remotasks operations in your location. We are discontinuing operations in your current location effective March 8, 2024," the email read in part.
The email further informed users that they had been "off-boarded" from their current projects, indicating a cessation of ongoing tasks.
However, assurances were given that users would receive payments for work completed, with funds being disbursed to the payment accounts linked to their profiles.
“As part of this change, you have been off-boarded from your current project. You will receive payments associated with your work completed via the payment account set up on your profile,” the email stated further.
Kenyans on Remotasks
During a visit to Mosop in Nandi County on January 16, 2024, President William Ruto had a conversation with Brian Kipchumba, a student studying for a diploma in ICT while also juggling part-time online work.
Brian shared with the Head of State how he manages to make a living through various digital platforms despite still being in school.
Brian revealed that he had earned approximately Ksh45,500 (USD 284) since December 26 through Remotask.
"I have been working online since December 26, 2023, until now. As you can see, the total amount of money I have earned is US$284 (Ksh45,000) minus the taxes you get, like Ksh40,000."
"You mean minus?" Ruto jested.
"I can confirm to Kenyans through my account that whatever you have been saying is a reality. I can say that online jobs pay well," Kipchumba couldn't stop spilling the beans.
Brian's act to show off to Ruto was met with public outrage with many scolding him for letting out their 'secret'.
What is Remotasks?
Remotasks, known for offering opportunities in data entry tasks, copywriting, AI development, and various evaluation-related endeavours, has gained popularity among unemployed Kenyan youths, freelancers and individuals seeking remote work opportunities.
The website is operated by Scale AI, Inc., a major player in the global e-commerce solutions industry. Unlike certain crowdsourcing platforms, this site provides complimentary training to its users.
Once trained, users can undertake tasks to earn money, but they must pass a test before accessing these tasks.
Newcomers are encouraged to begin with lower-paying tasks, which are less demanding and require minimal expertise.
As users progress through training, they gain access to more advanced levels and higher-paying opportunities.
