Raila Odinga's bodyguard Maurice Ogeta has recounted his ordeal at the hands of the police following his release.

Ogeta's release from police custody was confirmed by ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale who said that he was driven while blindfolded and left in the middle of the road in Ruai towards Kangundo.

Speaking during an interview with Radio Namlolwe after his release, Raila's bodyguard reiterated Etale's claims that he was blindfolded and held incommunicado.

Ogeta said he was arrested arbitrarily as he was heading to work and taken to the Nairobi Area police station.

Raila's guard added that police then blindfolded and drove him to an undisclosed location where he was held since Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

During his interrogations, police demanded to know the routes that Raila was supposed to use while protesting.

"They demanded to know the route plan almost 20 times and I told them my boss was unwell and I wasn't sure if he (Raila) will even come out for the demonstrations but they continued pressing me to tell them his whereabouts, which I said I was unaware because I was just heading to the office," Ogeta said.

Raila's bodyguard further disclosed that police grilled him about guns and Azimio's plans for the anti-government protests.

"They questioned me about the guns and my boss' plans for the protests… I think my arrest and detention was about Jakom's (Raila) whereabouts and the route plan," he said.

Raila's guard additionally disclosed that he was set free on Saturday, July 22, 2023, around 1 am.

Ogeta said that he was whisked from the detention room by hooded gunmen who dumped him in Ruai, adding that the masked officers wore gloves to avoid leaving traces.

"I asked them where I was because I couldn't locate where I was but one of them dismissed me saying you will just find your way," Ogeta said.

"When I was being released they brought an inventory of what was found in the vehicle which I signed but with reservation as the content of the vehicle was not accurately captured," he added.
