The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into two separate fatal shooting incidents that occurred in South B, Nairobi and Kirinyaga counties, following reports of civilian casualties.
According to IPOA, the incidents, which transpired on Monday, 20 May 2024, and Wednesday, 22 May 2024, respectively, prompted the authority to deploy rapid response teams to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shootings.
The South B incident involved the fatal shooting of two individuals along Lusaka Road in Nairobi, while in Kirinyaga County, a civilian was shot dead by police officers on patrol.

According to IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori, the agency has sent rapid response teams to conduct investigations into the incidents.
"Pursuant to sections 6(a) of Cap.86 of the laws of Kenya, IPOA has - on its own motion - sent two rapid response teams to conduct investigations into the two incidents of fatal shooting. Upon completion of investigations and where criminal culpability is proven, IPOA will recommend prosecution," Makori said in a statement on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Police officer jailed
The investigations come on the heels of a recent conviction of a police officer who was found guilty of killing a civilian in Bungoma County.
The officer, Francis Amulei Iyaya, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for seriously assaulting George Namalwa Wekesa, leading to his death.
The IPOA has also highlighted the importance of guidelines on the use of force by police officers.
According to these guidelines, officers are required to use non-violent means first and use proportionate force when necessary.
The guidelines also emphasize the importance of reporting any use of force that leads to death or serious injury.
The IPOA's investigations are part of its mandate to hold police officers accountable for their actions and ensure that they uphold the highest standards of professionalism and discipline.
The agency has been critical in shedding light on police misconduct and promoting transparency and accountability in the police force.
