A young man on Tuesday morning died after he was hit by a matatu that was involved a police chase in Nakuru town.

Eyewitnesses said that the public service vehicle was evading the police when it sped-off and hit two people who were waiting to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing on the Geoffrey Kamau Road.

The man died on the spot while the other victim, a woman, was taken to Nakuru County Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries.

This was the third accident in the recent past involving a police-chase amid a public outcry against police harassment on motorists who refuse to part with bribes.

The police have been accused of chasing after vehicles whose drivers refuse to pay bribes and smashing their windscreens.

According to several PSV saccos contacted by K24 Digital, matatus plying the Nakuru route allegedly part with Sh100 bribes daily while motorcycle riders pay Sh1,000 if flagged down by a traffic officer.

Efforts to reach Nakuru Traffic commandant were futile as several calls to his phone went unanswered.
