Police in Mombasa County have arrested a man who attempted to commit suicide after he learnt that his wife had eloped with another man.
Awale Ali was arrested moments before he committed the act of hanging himself using a manilla rope upon his arrival at his Kibarani home where he established that his wife had left their matrimonial home alongside an unknown man and carried all their belongings.
Man arraigned for attempted suicide
He was later arraigned before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet where he denied charges of attempted suicide levelled against him.
Ali informed the court that he was not arrested for the act of hanging himself as alleged by the police.
"I went home from work, and upon my arrival l was met by an empty house. My wife had left me for another man and had carried everything that I have worked for. l was shocked. l was arrested while in the process of hanging myself," he told the court.
However, according to police, Ali was rescued by neighbours who had witnessed him trying to commit the act and came to his rescue by cutting the manilla rope.
The magistrate noted that the suspect looked disturbed and confused and ordered him to be held for 14 days.
