A police officer has been arraigned before Mombasa Law Courts over the offence of killing his girlfriend.

Police Constable Meshack Kosgei appeared before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Orara.

However, he did not plead to the murder charges since he was yet to undergo a mental assessment test.

Orara ordered the state to avail the suspect to Coast General Referral Hospital to undergo the mental assessment test.

The magistrate further issued orders to have the suspect detained at the Shimo La Tewa GK Prison pending arraignment in court for plea taking.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) through state counsel Yusuf Mohammed applied to have the suspect detained at the Shimo La Tewa GK prison, an application which had been opposed by Kosgei's lawyer Titus Kirui.

Kirui had through an application requested the court to direct that the suspect be detained at Nyali Police station where he was previously being held.

Shot wife in Mombasa

The officer who had worked for three years in Mombasa is alleged to have shot his girlfriend Emmely Musiza and the mother of his two children on suspicion that she was having an affair with another man.

The deceased succumbed to gunshot wounds at Coast General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit two weeks ago.

At the time of her death, one bullet was still lodged in her stomach.

The matter will be mentioned on January 16.
