The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called out Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha for 'profiling' a female television journalist.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 27, MCK CEO David Omwoyo asked NCIC to summon the CS for questioning.

"The Media Council of Kenya calls on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NICC) to ensure the Cabinet Secretary issues an unconditional apology, withdraws the unfortunate remarks and rescinds his directives against the smooth operation of the media.

"The council is disturbed that such comments, actions and directives by a senior government official can expose members of the Fourth Estate to unnecessary harassment, ridicule, and victimization in the line of duty," Omwoyo said.

Magoha remarks

During an interview on Monday, July 25, CS Magoha asked a female Muslim journalist to identify herself before he could respond to her question.

“Kwanza wewe unatoka wapi? Who are you representing? Because if you’re representing Al-Shabaab I will not answer you,” Magoha told the scribe.

The remarks caused uproar online forcing the Muslim community to react.

"The remarks annoyed us especially because they came from a respectable person like the CS. We were used to hearing such remarks from people like touts and layabouts to our girls in Hijabs.

"But if a minister makes such remarks, we are giving him a seven-day ultimatum to issue a public apology across all media outlets or we will hold nationwide demonstrations to force his resignation," Chair of the Council of Imams and Preachers in Uasin Gishu County Sheikh Abubakar Bini said.
