A driver plying Langata-CBD route on Friday found himself at the dock answering to the charges of mobile theft after he got angry that the woman who boarded a matatu was wearing a ring bought by a man.

From the charge sheet read out in court, the accused person Edwin Otieno “stole a mobile phone from Diana Njui on September 30 at Mobile stage along Langata road.”

While quoting the charge, the court clerk said that the mobile phone was valued at ksh32, 000 but Otieno disputed the accusations before Kibera court Principal Magistrate Sharon Maroro.

Njui was in a matatu in which Otieno was the driver. And seated at the co-driver’s seat, he saw that Njui was wearing a ring which seemed expensive. He asked her if a man bought it for her but Njui assured him that she was the one who bought it.

In disbelief, Otieno told her off that he knew that there was a man behind the ring and he knew that she could not even afford it.

The duo continued arguing and Otieno who felt defeated allegedly attempted to throw her out of the vehicle but she resisted.

Otieno then is said to have grabbed her handbag and snatched her mobile phone before dropping her prematurely. Njui reported the matter to the police the next day and Otieno was traced and arrested.

The suspect was freed on ksh20, 000 bond with a similar surety. The matter is set to be mentioned on October 25.
