A 31-year-old man was on Monday, November 14, 2022, arraigned in court and charged with assaulting his wife before attempting to take his own in Emom, Baringo.

Laban Kipchumba appeared before Kabarnet Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ateya where he denied two charges of grievous harm and attempting suicide.

Attacked at Baringo home

The suspect is accused of chopping his wife's hand at their home in Kapseret village before attempting to take his own life after a disagreement on November 7, 2022.

"Laban Kipchumba on November, 7 this year at around 5pm at Kapseret village in Baringo central unlawfully did grievous harm to Veronica Jepkoech Lagat and attempted suicide contrary to section 226 as read with the section 36 of the penal code,” read part of the charge sheet.

Police reports indicate the accused had a habit of quarrelling with his wife after getting intoxicated.

The 27-year-old mother of two is said to have endured the abuse until November 7 when Kipchumba grabbed a machete and chopped off her right hand.

After the heinous act, the suspect attempted to slit his own throat.

He was, however, rescued by neighbours who rushed him and his wife to hospital.

Appearing in court on Monday, the suspect urged the presiding magistrate to grant him reasonable bond terms.

Prosecution counsel led by Casmir Obiero did not object to the release of the suspect on bail.

“We do not object to any bond terms, have supplied witnesses’ statements, and we pray to the court that we get a pre-bail report through before bond can be issued,” Obiero noted.

The magistrate directed that the suspect be detained pending determination of his bail application. The case will be mentioned on November 29.

“The case will come for a mention on November 29 for a pre-bail report to be presented for bond determination. Hearing of the case will be on December 19. The accused to remain in police custody,” Ateya ordered.
