Gov't gives Kenyans 7 days to collect over 290 unclaimed bodies from Nairobi morgues

The County Government of Nairobi has issued a 7-day notice to members of the public to collect 292 unclaimed bodies from three city morgues.

County Secretary Jairus Musumba said 214 bodies are lying at the City Mortuary, 50 at Mbagathi Hospital funeral home and 28 at Mama Lucy Hospital mortuary.

The public notice contains details of the deceased persons including names, gender and dates of admission.

Musumba urged members to identify and collect the bodies within one week, failure to which the bodies will be disposed of at city cemeteries.

"Pursuant to Public Health Act Cap 242 [Subsidiary; PUBLIC HEALTH (PUBLIC MORTUARIES) RULES, 1991][2]. Interested members of the public are asked to identify and collect the named bodies within 7 days failure to which the Nairobi City Council will seek authority for disposal," the notice reads.

Bodies disposed

City Hall's Health department issued a similar notice in September last year, saying at the time there were 236 unclaimed bodies lying at Mama Lucy Hospital and City morgues.

"The following 218 unclaimed bodies are lying at the Nairobi City Mortuary and 18 at the Mama Lucy Hospital Mortuary from the date of admission awaiting collection pursuant to the Public Health Act Cap 242 subsidiary; public health (public mortuaries) rules, 1991," the county said in the notice.

"Interested members of the public are asked to identify and collect the below-named bodies within seven days, failure to which the Nairobi City County will seek authority for disposal," the notice added.

In most cases, most of the bodies are collected from accident and crime scenes in they city everyday.
